SafarCabby Car And Taxi Rentals In Shillong FAQs

Question 1

How much does car rental in Shillong cost for a full-day Cherrapunji trip?

Accepted Answer

A sedan for the Shillong to Cherrapunji full-day run typically starts around ₹1,800–₹2,500 depending on the vendor and whether the return is included. An SUV for the same route starts around ₹2,500–₹3,500. Prices are higher during peak season (October to January) when demand from tourists is at its highest. Compare vendor rates on SafarCabby before confirming to find the current best rate.

Question 2

Can I get a cab from Shillong to Guwahati airport for an early morning flight?

Accepted Answer

Yes, and this is one of the most frequently booked outstation routes from Shillong. The drive takes about 3 hours on NH6, so most drivers recommend a 3am or 4am departure for a 7am or 8am flight. Pre-book through SafarCabby the evening before - early morning cabs at short notice are harder to confirm in Shillong.

Question 3

Is self drive car rental available in Shillong?

Accepted Answer

Yes, self drive options are available in Shillong through verified vendors on SafarCabby. Drivers should be comfortable with hill roads - gradients are steep in places and the Cherrapunji and Dawki routes have sections that require careful downhill braking. An automatic transmission vehicle makes the drive significantly less tiring on mountain roads.

Question 4

What is the best vehicle for the Dawki and Mawlynnong circuit from Shillong?

Accepted Answer

An SUV is recommended for this circuit. The main roads are paved but the village approach roads near Mawlynnong and the descent to Dawki river have rough patches. An Innova Crysta or similar SUV handles the route comfortably for families of four to six. A sedan works for two to three passengers travelling light.

Question 5

Does the Lachumiere area in Shillong get congested during peak hours?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The Lachumiere junction and the stretch toward Polo Ground see heavy traffic between 8:30am and 10am on weekdays due to school and office movement. If you are starting an outstation trip from a hotel in central Shillong, ask your driver to arrive by 8am or plan to leave after 10:30am to avoid unnecessary delays before you even hit NH6.

Question 6

Can I hire a cab from Shillong to Kaziranga National Park?

Accepted Answer

Yes, Kaziranga is about 250 kilometres from Shillong and takes 5–6 hours via Jorabat and NH27. Most travellers book a multi-day outstation cab for this route, covering Kaziranga over two days before returning via Guwahati. SafarCabby vendors handling this route are familiar with the NH27 stretch and the park's gate timings.

Question 7

Is it possible to visit the living root bridges near Nongriat on a day trip from Shillong?

Accepted Answer

Technically yes, but it is a long day. The drive from Shillong to Tyrna (the trailhead) takes about 2 hours via Cherrapunji. The descent to the double-decker root bridge is around 3,500 steps down and the same back up. A cab from Shillong that departs by 6am, waits at Tyrna, and returns by evening is the standard approach. Book the car the night before and confirm the driver is comfortable with the Cherrapunji road.

Question 8

How do I book an airport transfer from Umroi Airport to Shillong city?

Accepted Answer

Pre-book through SafarCabby before your flight lands. Umroi Airport has limited cab options at the terminal, and the 35-kilometre drive into Shillong on a mountain road after dark is not the time to be negotiating fares. A verified driver from SafarCabby meets you at arrivals with a fixed fare confirmed in advance.
