SafarCabby Car And Taxi Rentals In Gangtok FAQs

Question 1

How do I get from Bagdogra Airport to Gangtok by cab?

Accepted Answer

Bagdogra Airport is approximately 124 kilometres from Gangtok, and the drive takes three to four hours via NH10. Pre-book a cab through SafarCabby before you fly - shared jeep services stop running after 5pm, and negotiating an unbooked cab outside the terminal at night costs significantly more than a confirmed rate.

Question 2

Can I rent a car for Nathula Pass from Gangtok?

Accepted Answer

Yes, but only Indian nationals can visit Nathula Pass, and a permit must be arranged at least one day in advance through a registered tour operator in Gangtok. Your SafarCabby vendor can guide you through the permit process. The pass is closed on Mondays and during adverse weather, so build flexibility into your itinerary.

Question 3

What type of vehicle is best for Sikkim mountain roads?

Accepted Answer

For routes like Nathula, Tsomgo Lake, Rumtek, and any North Sikkim destination, book an SUV - the Bolero, Scorpio, or Innova handle the gradient and surface conditions reliably. A sedan is fine for the Bagdogra-Gangtok transfer and city sightseeing at lower altitudes, but it struggles on the steeper switchback roads.

Question 4

Is there a self drive option in Gangtok?

Accepted Answer

Self drive car rental in Gangtok is available for city circuits and lower-altitude routes. The Nathula road and North Sikkim permit zones require a local driver who knows the checkpoints and road conditions. If you want independence on the city and valley routes, a self drive works well - check available options on SafarCabby.

Question 5

What is the best time to visit Tsomgo Lake?

Accepted Answer

October to May gives the clearest views and the best road conditions. The lake freezes in winter (December to February), which is popular for the experience but cold. Avoid the monsoon months of June through September when the road can be blocked by landslides. Arrive before 9am to beat the day-tripper crowds from Gangtok.

Question 6

How much does a cab from Gangtok to Siliguri or NJP cost?

Accepted Answer

A one-way cab from Gangtok to Siliguri or New Jalpaiguri station starts at approximately ₹1,800 to ₹2,500 for a sedan and ₹2,500 to ₹3,500 for an SUV, depending on the vendor and season. Festival periods and peak tourist months (April–June, October–November) see higher rates. Compare vendor quotes on SafarCabby to confirm current pricing for your travel dates.

Question 7

Can a group of 10 people travel together from Gangtok to Yumthang Valley?

Accepted Answer

Yes - a tempo traveller is the practical choice for groups of 10 or more heading to Yumthang or the Zero Point in North Sikkim. The Lachung road is wide enough for a tempo traveller and the vehicle is more economical than splitting across two or three SUVs for a two-day trip. Book in advance since North Sikkim permit groups need pre-arranged transport.

Question 8

Does the Gangtok cab service cover the Old Silk Route to Zuluk?

Accepted Answer

Yes, verified vendors on SafarCabby cover the Zuluk and Old Silk Route circuit from Gangtok. This is a permit-required route for Indian nationals, and the drive to Zuluk takes around four hours. It's typically an overnight trip with a stay at Zuluk or Nathang Valley. Book an SUV and confirm the permit requirement with your vendor at the time of booking.
